"The Code of Hammurabi (also known as the Codex Hammurabi and Hammurabi's Code) was created ca. 1760 BC (middle chronology) and is one of the earliest extant sets of laws, and one of the best preserved examples of this type of document from ancient Babylon. It was created by the sixth Babylonian King, Hammurabi. Earlier collections of laws include the codex of Ur-Nammu, king of Ur (ca. 2050 BC), the Codex of Eshnunna (ca. 1930 BC) and the codex of Lipit-Ishtar of Isin (ca. 1870 BC).

The text contains a list of crimes and their various punishments, as well as settlements for common disputes and guidelines for citizens' conduct. The Code does not provide opportunity for explanation or excuses, though it does imply one's right to present evidence. The stele was openly displayed for all to see; thus, no man could plead ignorance of the law as an excuse. Scholars, however, presume that few people could read in that era, as literacy was primarily the domain of scribes.

Charles Francis Horne (born January 12, 1870 in Jersey City, New Jersey - died September 13, 1942 in Annapolis, Maryland) was an American author of books. He wrote or edited more than one hundred books, mostly multi-volume history works. He was a Professor of English at City College of New York.

I know I should have read the description - but this is incredibly short. I believe this book is now more of an academic reference than something you sit down and read. All I can grade it on is the translation and binding. The cover and binding looks to me like something from the 70s.. but thats not a bad thing. I like the sterile feel of this book. It is very academic feeling (and reading). Those of you looking at this book I am sure know what it is.. I am not sure if this is the best option for everyone - I feel it is expensive for what it is and I would recommend Kindle if you are looking to read it. The book has a good epilogue and description with historical background but it doesn't list all the codes (laws).
I've read better, but... Hey! This was free.
A good traduction of the Code of Hammurabi. An important and historic document that help see how society and morals have evolved through time.
Even though these were not the first laws in history at this dispensation this book was very interesting in some of the harshest punishments. What may have been unlikely was what was needed to get the job done.
It is great to be able to read such an old book of laws, some very harsh, but some others would be all right even today. Additionally, the reader will find out a lot about structure of the ancient society and their beliefs. Recommended especially for those interested in history.
I read this book simply to expand my understanding of historical thinking. This book delivered. The code seemed to be translated as literal as possible while being kept readable or understandable in modern-day language.
I needed a source for a research paper discussing the code of hummurabi. This is literally the code of Hammurabi and the rest of the text from the pillar.
